Hidden Epidemic...Gonorrhea and Syphilis are Back!

Did you know that at least a half million of Canadian teens are sexually active? The good news, according to the survey conducted by the Canadian Association for Adolescent Health (CAAH) and Ipsos-Reid in 2006, is that the majority are practicing safe sex. This survey showed that 75% of teens that engaged in sexual intercourse had used some sort of protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), now more commonly referred to as sexually transmitted infections (STIs), even though they showed no STI symptoms.

·    FACT: Studies show that 75% of sexually active teens use protection against STIs

Trick or Treat...How Sweet It Is

While all of us eventually outgrow "Trick or Treating" on Halloween, many of us may never outgrow sugar cravings. And with all those tempting, Halloween-sized treats available at this time of year, those cravings are almost impossible to fight!

But how many times have you heard that eating sugar may be bad for your health? No need to worry. Extensive scientific research has shown that there is no link between eating foods high in sugar and any chronic diseases except tooth decay. So at least have a toothbrush handy when you eat your candy!

Leonard (Red) Kelly Honoured

Not your typical Hockey Night in Canada…

Leonard (Red) Kelly, 79, is no stranger to honours and awards. A Member of the Order of Canada, Canada Sports Hall of Fame, Hockey Hall of Fame, as well as the Athlete of the Half Century, 8-time winner of the Stanley Cup (the most held by any player that was never on a Montreal Canadiens Team), 4-time winner of the Lady Byng Trophy (for most gentlemanly play), Coach of the Year in 1968, and the Encyclopedia Britannica Achievement in Life Award (he was the sports figure honoured, and that year the Literary Honour went to James Michener and the entertainment honour went to Ella Fitzgerald, so he was in a prestigious field!)

On October 4, 2006, Mr. Kelly added another accolade to this already impressive list. He was honoured before the Leafs' home opener against Ottawa, when a banner bearing his image was lifted to the Air Canada Centre (ACC) rafters. Although Toronto does not usually retire numbers, in 1993-94, they started honouring players with banners portraying their images and numbers. On that special Hockey Night in Canada at the ACC, Mr. Kelly shared this honour with Borje Salming, and the late Clarence (Hap) Day, all three are in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Mr. Kelly played 20 seasons in the NHL (1947-1967) and simultaneously served as a federal member of parliament from 1962-1965. He never missed a game and he never missed a vote during that busy period. When he arrived in Toronto half-way through the 1959-60 season, Mr. Kelly was already accomplished as a Norris Trophy-winning defenceman with Detroit. He was moved up to play centre for the Leafs and won four more Stanley Cups, adding to the four he earned while playing with the Wings.

He then coached the Los Angeles Kings for two seasons, the Pittsburgh Penguins for four seasons, and the Toronto Maple Leafs for four seasons, before retiring from hockey.

A member of the TCSCC since 1973, Mr. Kelly is hardly ever away from the ice, as he enjoys watching his grandsons skate at the Club!

What’s the most important equipment in the gym?

If you said a treadmill, stair climber, or an elliptical, you’re not even close. Nor is it a set of weights, a weight machine or a stability ball. It’s your ubiquitous disinfectant-filled spray bottle.

Spray for your health. Disinfecting the workout areas after use can help reduce exposure to contaminated surfaces, cross-contamination and bacterial growth, especially in dark moist areas, such as folded, perspiration-soaked yoga mats.

Some antibiotic-resistant bacteria (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)) lives on skin and survives on objects and surfaces such as gym equipment, mats and towels for more than 24 hours. Although S. aureus is found on the skin or in the noses of healthy people, it is one of the most common causes of skin infections.

Most infections are minor, resulting in pimples and boils. While some can have more serious implications such as surgical wound infections and pneumonia, requiring treatment with antibiotics.

MRSA is hard to treat with antibiotics, and can result in life-threatening blood or bone infections. Coming in contact with any contaminated surface in the gym may put you at risk of an infection.  For more Click Here...

An Eye Opener…

Conjuctivitis, also known as “pink eye”, is an inflammation of the transparent membrane (conjunctiva) that lines your eyelids and part of your eyeballs. Pink eye may be caused by a bacterial or viral infection; an allergic reaction to pollen or animal dander; or chemical irritants (smoke, chlorine, lens solution, etc.). For more Click Here...
